In the past few years, we've noticed large numbers of honeybees vanishing. This phenomena is referred to as colony collapse disorder (CCD). This may not seem like a travesty for most people other than beekeepers, but it actually affects everyone. Many crops depend on pollination, which can be provided by honey bees as well as other insects. With fewer insects to pollinate, the crop production would be limited or nonexistent. One of the best theories to date on the cause of CCD is the overuse of certain pesticides, so please be careful when using any.
In the words of Republican Mitch McConnell during an interview on Face the Nation, "we certainly don't need honeybee insurance... $150 million for honeybee insurance. This is nonsense," I suppose honeybees are not important on his planet. I've often wondered where exactly that is.
ReplyDeleteIt is scary to think about how the bees disappearing could really affect life. Bee Movie put it in perspective for me. I have noticed that we have honey bees that come to our holly bushes by the back door. I stood there watching them go from little flower to little flower. It was neat to hear the humming comming from the bushes. I am not sure where they are coming from. Is it possible they are wild honey bees? or maybe there is a beekeeper nearby that i don't know about. The web page looks awesome aunt marcie!
ReplyDeleteHi Amanda. You probably have a beekeeper somewhere nearby. Watch the bees as they fly away, it may give you a better idea which direction that they're coming from.
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa! McConnell's right, we don't need to spend that kind of money on insurance - that won't keep the bees alive. We need to ban the use of Imidicloprids, IF, that's what's causing the problem. Did he really say that honeybees aren't important???
